The Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands (MACI) recently held a staff appreciation and awards dinner at Luca Restaurant, following a day-long strategic retreat held at the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort. At the dinner, special recognition was given to Vassel Godfrey Johnson III, 18, who has been accepted to study toward a Bachelor’s of Engineering in Naval Architecture at Newcastle University, U.K.
Mr. Johnson was presented the David A. Anderson Memorial Scholarship, which will be awarded every four years to a young Caymanian who wishes to pursue a career in the maritime industry. The scholarship is named in honour of Mr. Anderson, a former MACI employee, who was the first Caymanian to achieve the distinction of certification as a Marine Surveyor by Lloyd’s College in London. He attained this high mark whilst being employed full-time by MACI where he had worked for 18 months. On hand for the presentation were Mr. Anderson’s parents, David and Peggy, as well as Mr. Johnson’s parents, Vassel and Sheila.
Mr. Johnson will commence Newcastle’s 3-year programme next month. He attended Cayman Prep and High School, and recently received three A’ Level passes.
