GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman – A group of high schools students from John Gray High School recently visited the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands (MACI), parent organisation of the historic Cayman Islands Shipping Registry, to learn about career possibilities in the maritime industry, both land-based and at sea.
“The Maritime Authority appreciated the opportunity to participate in the Annual Chamber of Commerce Careers Awareness Programme for the first time,” said Phillippa Knights, Senior Human Resources Officer, and organiser of the event. “The group of JGHS students that visited the George Town Headquarters of our global organisation eagerly expressed their enthusiasm to the presentations by our maritime administration professionals,” she observed. “The Chamber’s goal is the provide the youth of Cayman with the opportunity to learn more about the local economy, future employment and career options available here and we were very pleased to be able to help the Chamber achieve its goal by presenting information on our field of endeavour to the students,” she added.

Joel Walton; Mr. Peter Southgate, Deputy Director, Global Safety and Compliance & Head of Section (Yachts); Mr. Saagar Kadiyala, Surveyor Trainee; Mr. Vassel Godfrey Johnson III, Surveyor Intern; Mr. Collin McRae, Coordinator, Technical Compliance; Ms. Lorna Washington, Registrar of Shipping; Ms. Suzanne Rondon, Assistant Registrar of Shipping; Mr. Mark Hunte, Senior Assistant Registrar of Shipping; Ms. Shawanna Hera, Management Trainee, and Ms. Knights from Human Resources.
“Today there is a wealth of career options within the maritime industry such as opportunities with our own organisation and its global network, as well as scholarship possibilities available to young people,” says Mr. Walton, “and choosing that path will enable them to carry on a rich Caymanian maritime tradition, which is really the foundation of our islands’ success,” he added. In fact, with Mr. Walton at the helm of MACI, he is, himself, carrying on his Brac family’s own seafaring heritage.
